Toxo-Mox general information

What is Toxo-Mox used for?

Toxo-Mox tablets 250mg are a combination veterinary antibiotic used for short-term treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections commonly found in cats and dogs.  These include skin disease, such as deep and superficial pyodermas, which are infections of the skin where bacteria have entered a cut, or a wound causing symptoms like itching, pustules (inflamed pus filled swelling), hair loss, raised lesions, dried discharge.  Toxo-Mox 250 is also used to treat urinary tract infections, upper and lower respiratory tract infection and enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine).

How does Toxo-Mox work?

Toxo-Mox tablets 250mg contain a combination of two antibiotics.  Amoxycillin is as an antibiotic similar to penicillin and belongs to the beta-lactam group of antibiotics, which block the formation of the bacterial cell wall and this kills the bacteria.  However, amoxycillin can be inactivated by the bacterial enzyme beta-lactamase that makes certain bacteria resistant to amoxycillin.  Clavulanic acid is an antibiotic structurally related to the penicillins that is able to inactivate a wide range of beta-lactamase enzymes commonly found in amoxycillin-resistant bacteria.  This dual action of Toxo-Mox tablets provides a broad spectrum antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which extends the range of susceptible bacteria.  Toxo-Mox 250 is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including susceptible Staphylococci, Streptococci and Escherichia coli, and is used to treat infections common to cats and dogs caused by these bacteria.

What does Toxo-Mox contain?
