Dermol Ointment General information
What is Dermol Ointment used for?
Dermol Ointment is a topical medication used to treat several moderate to severe skin conditions, such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus (chronic itchy skin of unknown origin) and discoid lupus erythematosus (recurring scaly rash). Dermol Ointment is particularly helpful for conditions that do not respond to less active treatments and relieves symptoms such as itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling and discomfort.
How does Dermol Ointment work?
Dermol Ointment contains the very potent anti-inflammatory corticosteroid clobetasol propionate 0.05% that blocks the production of a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin, which causes inflammation. This reduces symptoms of inflammatory skin conditions that do not respond satisfactorily to less active steroids.
What does Dermol Ointment contain?
Dermol Ointment contains the active ingredient clobetasol propionate 0.05%, a topical corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory skin conditions. It also contains also sorbitan sesquioleate, propylene glycol and white petrolatum.
What is the difference between Dermol Ointment and Dermol Cream?
Dermol Cream can be easily rubbed into your skin without being greasy and is for skin that is not too dry. Dermol ointment is better for dry scaly skin as it contains a mixture of oil and water that helps keep moisture in and preventing evaporation.
Treating eczema with Dermol Ointment
Dermol Ointment contains clobetasol, a potent topical corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory skin conditions, particularly conditions that do not respond to less active steroids. Eczema also known as atopic dermatitis, is an inflammatory skin condition that usually runs in families. It is also associated with other “atopic” conditions like asthma and hay fever. Clobetasol in Dermol Ointment blocks the production of a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin, which causes inflammation and helps relieve symptoms of eczema, which usually begins as patches of thickened itchy areas of skin, which can flare into inflamed, red, blistered and weepy patches.
Dermol Ointment for treating itchy skin
Itchy skin is a symptom of several skin conditions, like dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis; if untreated your skin can become sore and inflamed, and cause a skin rash. You can apply Dermol Ointment directly to the affected area of skin to help relieve your symptoms.
What are the side effects of Dermol Ointment ?
Dermol Ointment 0.05% is generally well tolerated but may cause side effects, including itching, burning and irritation of the areas of skin that you have applied the ointment. Other side effects include changes in the skin such as thinning or colour changes and blood vessels that are close to the skin surface, becoming more visible.
How should Dermol Ointment be used?
Dermol Ointment 0.05% should be used once or twice daily only for a short time, until symptoms improve, as recommended by your doctor or pharmacist. You should not use it for longer than recommended. Clean the infected area thoroughly and allow it to dry, then gently rub in the Dermol Ointment until most of it disappears. Use a small amount on a fingertip, just enough to cover the affected area. You should always wash your hands after applying the medication and make sure you don’t get any in your eyes, nose or mouth. Do not apply dressings, bandages, cosmetics, lotions, or other skin medications to the area being treated with Dermol Ointment unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
How long should you use Dermol Ointment?
Dermol Ointment 0.05% is intended for short-term treatment and you should use it only for as long as your doctor recommends. You should see an improvement in your skin condition within a few days or weeks, depending on the severity of the condition.
When should Dermol Ointment not be used?
You should not use Dermol Ointment if you:
- you are allergic to clobetasol or any other ingredient in Dermol Ointment
- your skin is broken or infected
- you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
What to do if you miss a dose of Dermol Ointment
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Dermol Ointment be stored?
Store Dermol below 25°C (77°F) and keep it out of direct sunlight. Heat and direct sunlight can reduce the effectiveness of this medicine.
