Fucithalmic general information

What is Fucithalmic used for?

Fucithalmic eye drops are used to treat bacterial infections of the surface of the eye. These include: conjunctivitis, which is inflammation of the conjunctiva (outermost layer of the eye and the inside of the eyelid); blepharitis or inflammation of the eyelid; sty, which is infection of a hair follicle on the eyelid and keratitis or inflammation of the cornea (the clear area at the front of the eye over the lens and pupil). Fucithalmic eye drops help relieve symptoms of eye infection including sore eyes, redness, inflammation, discharge and crusting around the eyelid.

How does Fucithalmic work?

Fucithalmic eye drops contain fusidic acid, which is a steroidal antibiotic, originally derived from the fungus Fusidium coccineum, that is used to treat bacterial infections of the surface of the eye, caused by a range of susceptible bacteria. Fusidic acid in Fucithalmic eye drops inhibits bacterial protein synthesis so that the bacteria cannot replicate and spread but it does not kill the bacteria. Fucithalmic eye drops are formulated as a gel, which mixes with your tears on the surface of your eye that keep your eyes moist, and liquefies to form a thin clear liquid when it mixes with the salts in the tear fluid. This helps prevent blurring of your vision. Fusidic acid in Fucithalmic eye drops is then released slowly from the gel, which allows the eye drops to work more effectively for longer.

What does Fucithalmic contain?

Fucithalmic eye drops contain the active ingredient fusidic acid hemihydrate (1%), a topical antibiotic used for eye infections. They also contain benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, mannitol, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, water.
