What is ERA used for?
ERA tablets 500mg are an antibiotic used to treat a variety of mild to moderate infections caused by certain susceptible types of bacteria in different areas of the body. ERA tablets 500mg may also be used as an alternative treatment for primary syphilis in patients allergic to penicillin antibiotics; and for specific infectious diseases like Legionnaire's disease. ERA tablets 500mg are also used to for long-term prophylaxis to prevent infections of rheumatic fever where there is a history of rheumatic fever, and to prevent bacterial endocarditis in people with congenital heart disease, who are allergic to penicillin antibiotics.
How does ERA work?
ERA tablets 500mg contain erythromycin, an antibiotic belonging to the macrolides group of antibiotics. Erythromycin in ERA tablets 500mg is effective against a wide range of bacteria including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Haemophilus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia trachomatis and works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis so that the bacteria cannot produce proteins that are needed for its survival. ERA tablets 500mg do not work against viruses which use a different mechanism to grow and replicate.
