Amacin general information

What is Amacin used for?

Amacin Eye and Ear ointment is combination medication used to treat most common eye and ear conditions caused by bacterial infection in dogs and cats.  These conditions include, conjunctivitis, which is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the outermost layer of the eye and the inside of the eyelid; superficial keratitis or inflammation of the cornea (the clear area at the front of the eye over the lens and pupil); and otitis externa, which is infection of the outer ear.  Amacin Eye and Ear ointment is also used to treat primary or secondary wounds, or allergic reaction of the skin that have become infected.  Amacin Eye and Ear ointment helps relieve symptoms of eye and ear infection including sore eyes, redness, inflammation, discharge and crusting around the eyelid.

How does Amacin work?

Amacin Eye and Ear ointment contains a corticosteroid and three antibiotics used in combination to treat bacterial infection and inflammation of the eye and ear in cats and dogs.  Prednisolone in Amacin Eye and Ear ointment is a synthetic derivative of the natural corticosteroid hormone cortisol, with potent anti-inflammatory properties, and works by reducing the vascular (blood vessels) and cellular inflammatory response that triggers inflammation, primarily by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals, like prostaglandins and leukotrienes from inflammatory cells; also by preventing the migration of inflammatory cells into inflamed tissues.  This action of Prednisolone in Amacin Eye and Ear ointment reduces the swelling, redness and pain associated with inflammation.  Neomycin in Amacin Eye and Ear ointment is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that is used in topical medications and is effective against wide range of bacteria found in infected skin, including Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas and Proteus species.  Neomycin in Amacin Eye and Ear ointment works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis and inhibiting the production of proteins needed for bacterial cell growth.  The antibiotic Polymyxin in Amacin Eye and Ear ointment is only effective Gram negative bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, and is often used in combination with another antibiotic for topical bacterial infection.  Polymyxin in Amacin Eye and Ear Ointment works by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, which makes it more permeable and the bacteria more susceptible to the effects of other antibiotics.  Sulfacetamide is a sulphonamide antibiotic used in topical applications, is rapidly absorbed into the surfaces of the eye and ear and works by blocking bacterial synthesis of folic acid which is essential for bacterial cell growth.  The combined antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action of Amacin Eye and Ear ointment relieves symptoms of inflammation and prevents spread of infection.
