Scopoderm TTS general information

What is Scopoderm TTS used for?

Scopoderm TTS is a transdermal patch used to relieve the symptoms of motion sickness, including nausea, vomiting and vertigo. Scopoderm TTS 1.5 can be used to prevent motion sickness due to all forms of travel including, air, sea, train or car travel and will last for up to 3 days, but should be removed when the journey is over.

How does Scopoderm TTS work?

Scopoderm TTS Patches contain scopolamine (also known as hyoscine) an anticholinergic agent that works by acting as a competitive antagonist at the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the central nervous system. Motion sickness is caused by conflicting information being received by the brain from the eyes and the vestibular system of the ear (fluid filled canals in the inner ear) where motion or changes in the body’s position is detected. The messages sent by the ear suggest motion, whereas the messages sent by the eye suggest that the body is still and this conflict causes the brain to interpret that there is an ingested toxin that needs to be cleared from the system, which stimulates the area postrema of the brain (induces vomiting when poisons are detected) to induce the vomiting reflex. Scopolamine in Scopoderm TTS patches blocks the transmission of nerve impulses from the inner ear to the vomiting center in the brain, which prevents transmission of nerve signals to receptors in the stomach, so that the vomiting reflex is not induced. Each patch is formulated for transdermal delivery by releasing scopolamine through the intact skin into the systemic circulation continuously for up to 72 hours.

What does Scopoderm TTS contain?

Scopoderm TTS Patches contain the active ingredient scopolamine (also known as hyoscine), an anticholinergic agent used to treat motion sickness. They also contain: light mineral oil, polyisobutylene (1.200.000) and polyisobutylene (35.000); with a backing film of pigmented MDPE/AL/PET/HS Film (vapour coated aluminised polyester) with outer coating of pigmented medium density polyethylene (MDPE) and a heat sealable inner coating; a release controlling membrane of polypropylene film; and a release liner (discarded before use) of silicone/polyester film.
