Prusent general information

What is Prusent used for?

Prusent tablets 2mg are used to treat severe chronic constipation when other laxative medications do not provide relief.  Constipation is usually defined as having less than three bowel movements per week and chronic constipation is when infrequent bowel movement, which is usually accompanied by difficulty in passing stools, continues for several weeks or longer.  Primary constipation often has no underlying cause but is usually due to a basic problem with the function of the colon and the defecation process and with reduced gastrointestinal motility.  Prusent tablets 2mg are not used to treat secondary constipation which can be due to a bowel obstruction, bowel cancer, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease, hormonal disorders like diabetes or underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), and to some medications particularly opiates like morphine and codeine.  Prusent tablets 2mg restore gastrointestinal motility and relieve the discomfort of chronic constipation.

How does Prusent work?

Prusent tablets 2mg contain prucalopride, a dihydro-benzofuran-carboxamide with gastrointestinal prokinetic or enterokinetic activities that is used to treat chronic constipation.  Prucalopride in Prusent tablets 2mg is a selective, high affinity serotonin (5-HT4) receptor agonist and works by binding to the 5-HT4 receptor on the intestinal wall.  Intestinal peristalsis (waves of contraction and relaxation that propels food) is regulated primarily by the neurotransmitter serotonin, due to serotonin mediated release of other neurotransmitters that stimulate (acetylcholine) or inhibit muscular contraction of the intestine, which maintains peristaltic movement of food.  Prucalopride in Prusent tablets 2mg increases the frequency and strength of the muscular contractions of the colon, which stimulates the passage of compacted faeces and restores normal bowel movements.
