Domton general information

What is Domton used for?

Domton tablets 10mg are used to treat acute nausea and vomiting to prevent vomiting and relieve symptoms of nausea. Domton is also used to help relieve symptoms of dyspepsia, like bloating, fullness, heartburn, flatulence and abdominal pain or discomfort when the digestive system is out of rhythm. This can be due to gastroparesis, which is delayed emptying of the stomach caused by slowing down or paralysis of normal muscular muscle contractions as a result of altered eating patterns or some medical conditions; or dysmotility, which is when food processing slows down due to slowing down of the muscular contractions of the small intestine. An off-label use for Domton tablets 10mg is to increase breast milk production.

How does Domton work?

Domton tablets 10mg contain domperidone an antiemetic and prokinetic that is used to relieve symptoms of nausea, vomiting and dyspepsia. Domperidone in Domton tablets 10mg works by blocking receptors for the chemical messenger dopamine in the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the area postrema, which is outside the blood‐brain barrier and is where the vomit response is triggered.

This action of domperidone in Domton stops messages sent from the irritated or upset stomach being received by the chemoreceptor trigger zone, preventing the brain triggering the vomiting response and relieving symptoms of feeling queasy and nauseous. Domton also blocks dopamine receptors in the upper digestive system, which increases contractions of the stomach and intestines, allowing food to move more easily through the stomach.

This action of domperidone in Domton restores the natural rhythm of muscle contraction and relaxation in the stomach, which helps push food through the digestive system. Domton tablets 10mg work through the same mechanism to prevent nausea and vomiting and also to relieve symptoms of dyspepsia and gastroparesis.

They also contain the inactive ingredients, starch, lactose, di-calcium phosphate, MCCP 102, titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate and talcum.

Treating nausea, vomiting and dyspepsia with Domton

Domton tablets 10mg contains domperidone an antiemetic and prokinetic that is used to relieve symptoms of acute nausea and vomiting; also, dyspepsia due to gastroparesis, which is delayed emptying of the stomach, or dysmotility, which is when food processing slows down.

Domton relieves symptoms, like bloating, fullness, heartburn, flatulence and abdominal pain or discomfort when the digestive system is out of rhythm. Domperidone in Domton tablets 10mg works by blocking receptors for the chemical messenger dopamine in the chemoreceptor trigger zone, the area of the brain that triggers the vomiting response, which prevents messages sent from the irritated or upset stomach being received by the chemoreceptor trigger zone and relieving symptoms of feeling queasy and nauseous and preventing vomiting.

Domton for increasing breast milk production

Domton tablets 10mg contains domperidone an antiemetic and prokinetic that can also be used to increase breast milk production as a side effect of its actions, for women who are having trouble producing enough breast milk. Domperidone in Domton tablets 10mg increases blood levels of the hormone prolactin, which stimulates milk production in a new mother's breast cells.

This is an indirect result of blocking the action of the chemical messenger dopamine, which is also how Domton prevents nausea and vomiting. Domton does pass from the blood into breast milk, however, it is present in small amounts and there is no indication that it will harm the baby.

Domperidone in Domton tablets 10mg has fewer side effects than metoclopramide, which is another medication used for stomach problems that also stimulates milk production.

What are the side effects of Domton?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Domton tablets 10mg include headache, abdominal cramps, and dry mouth. Because domperidone in Domton tablets 10mg does not cross the blood brain barrier it does not cause what are known as extrapyramidal side effects, like convulsion and involuntary muscle actions that can be associated with some dopamine blocking medications.

However, for the same reason Domton can increase the production of the hormone prolactin, which stimulates breast milk secretion, and this can cause breast enlargement (gynaecomastia) and temporary stoppage of periods (amenorrhoea). These side effects are temporary will stop as soon as you stop taking Domton.
