Kenalog general information

What is Kenalog used for?

Kenalog in Orobase is used to treat inflammatory lesions in the mouth, including mouth ulcers and sores caused by trauma to the lining of the mouth (oral mucosa) or gums. Kenalog is a topical treatment prepared in a special soothing, protective dental paste that allows the medication to stay in place when applied to the affected area of the mouth and helps to the reduce pain of inflammation caused by irritation of the ulcer or sore. Kenalog in Orobase treats the inflammation while allowing the lesion to heal.

How does Kenalog work?

Kenalog in Orobase contains triamcinalone a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid, similar to the naturally occurring cortisol and its metabolite hydrocortisone, with potent anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-pruritic (reduces itching) properties. Corticosteroids are hormones that are naturally produced by the adrenal glands and are involved in regulation of many functions including control of inflammatory and immune responses. Triamcinalone in Kenalog inhibits the production of inflammatory chemicals, like prostaglandins and leukotrienes, from inflammatory cells at specific sites such as a mouth ulcer. This reduces the swelling, redness and pain associated with inflammation. The dental paste that supports triamcinalone in Kenalog in Orobase helps keep the medication at the affected site so that it can be absorbed into the inflamed tissue without being washed away and at the same time protects the ulcer or lesion while it heals.

What does Kenalog contain?

Kenalog in Orobase contains the active ingredient triamcinolone acetonide 1mg/gm (0.1%) in emollient dental paste that is used to treat mouth ulcers. It also contains gelatine, pectin, carboboxymethylcellulose, sodium in Plastibase® (Plasticized Hydrocarbon Gel), a polyethylene and mineral oil gel base.

General systemic effects are less likely but may still occur and include suppression of adrenal glands, which produce endogenous (naturally occurring) corticosteroids, and may stop working efficiently, growth retardation in children, decreased bone mineral density, decreased resistance to infection, thinning of the skin.
